Where in the World Is Rebecca Now?

In the past two months or so I’ve posted from Georgia, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and West Virginia. If you’ve completely lost track of where I am and what I’m doing, I don’t blame you.

However, I’ve now arrived in my new home, where I’ll be for the next two years: Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin, a stone’s throw from the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. I’m working on a master’s degree in environmental education through the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, but I’m in an assistantship program for which I’ll be spending almost all of my time at an environmental ed facility here in the extreme northern end of the state. Confused yet? When someone asks me where I’m going to grad school I have to give them a ten-minute explanation.

But the simple answer to where I am is the North Woods, a land of mossy grottoes…

Sunlit meadows…

Inviting forest paths, filled with the sweet songs of White-Throated Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes…

An embarassment of riches in berry form…

And of course, many clear, cold, oligotrophic lakes, across which drift the haunting calls of loons. (Small point of interest, though, this is not where Land O’ Lakes butter is from. Apparently that’s a co-op in Minnesota.)

Jealous yet? After nine months in south Georgia, this is paradise to a woodsy Midwestern girl like me, ticks, deerflies and all. If anyone knows of any good nature blogs located in the upper Midwest, particularly Wisconsin or the UP, please pass along the link!

Oh, yes, I am jealous, Rebecca, of your trip and relocation farther north. Your photographs are beautiful and full of places I want to visit. The mossy grotto I particularly like. I also envied your trip across the country, stopping and visiting, taking your time.
